Garcinia atroviridis Griff.
Generality The asam gelugur tree grows to a height of 20 m. and has long trunk, smooth grey bark and drooping branches. The leaves are dark green, shiny, long narrow with a pointed tip and upturned edges. Flowers are dark red. The round fruits are borne singly on twig ends 7 - 10 cm dia. They are heavy, Ingitudinally grooved by 12 to 16 and are flattened at the apex. The ripe fruits are bright-orange-yellow are sliced, dried and used in curries or stewed in plenty of sugar and eaten. Garcinia is a big-sized perennial plant commonly found in evergreen forests in the southern region of Thailand. Uses The fruit contains fruiting acids such as Citric acid, Tartaric acid, Malic acid and Ascorbic acid that have an antioxidant activity.
